Sauvignon VdP du Val de Loire

Vignerons de Valençay

Sébastien Vaillant and friend Damien Bossier are the only two members of the...

Vignerons de Valençay co-operative, making it the smallest of its kind in the Loire and possibly in France. Their 40 hectares of vines are located on the hillsides surrounding the River Cher and share much of the same Silex (flint) soils that make the finest of the Loire's wines.

The tiny co-operative has 40 hectares of vineyards in total. The Sauvignon Blanc vines for this wine are located on the flint/clay soils of the Loire Valley, in the Valençay area. The flint in particular imparts the characteristic mineral quality, while patches of sandy/lime topsoils over very stony and clay subsoils add richness and depth.

Vintage Information

Spring frosts in April heavily impacted yields in some areas of the Loire Valley, however, a warm and long summer gave the grapes concentration and sugar enabling them to ripen fully. Summer was so warm that many producers harvested around one month ahead of schedule. The 2017 vintage is looking promising as the wines are fruit-driven and despite their advanced state of ripeness at harvest this year, retain good acidity and a pleasing balance on the palate. Yields are up around 7% compared to the 2016 vintage.

Sébastien transferred the grapes to the winery as soon as possible after picking to minimise damage to the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The grapes were pressed immediately in a pneumatic press, followed by a cool, slow fermentation in temperature controlled vats to maximise perfume and fruit character. Only stainless steel was used. The wine was released when young and fresh with no extended ageing or oxidative influence.

Tasting Notes

Light yellow in colour, this wine is very aromatic on the nose with notes of pineapple and apricot. It shows good mineral depths and intensity on the palate which make it a highly quaffable alternative that easily bears comparison with many a Sancerre. It has a fragrant nettley character on the palate, along with a crisp acidity on the dry finish.
