When Fernando Guedes planted Azevedo, and made the first wine in 1990, he...

pioneered the production of quality Vinho Verde. He immediately set out to transform the estate by planting 35 hectares of vineyards in this cool, wet part of north-western Portugal, bordered to the north by the Minho River adjacent to Spain, to the west by the Atlantic and to the south by the city of Porto.

Vineyards

Eschewing traditional high-trained pergolas, the Quinta de Azevedo vineyards were devised using a modern cordon-trained system. This ensures better exposure and aeration of the vines, which prevents disease and provides better exposure for the grapes, resulting in riper and healthier fruit at harvest.

Vintage Information

The 2017 vintage was characterised by low rainfall and above average temperatures. These conditions caused a delay in the vegetative cycle, and low-scale humidity, which was reflected in reduced incidences of disease on the vine. The resulting fruit was very ripe.

Vinification

Gentle destemming, crushing and pressing was carried out under the protection of inert gases, and the juice was clarified to the desired degree. It was then fermented at 16 - 18ºC. During maceration, around 40% of the wine was fermented in contact with the skins. After fermentation, the wine was matured in stainless steel tanks with "bâtonnage", stirring of the lees, for three months.

Tasting Notes

This wine is clear and bright with youthful tints and an intense aroma of well-ripened fruit, such as peaches and nectarines. On the palate, it is creamy with aromatic notes of ripe fruit with great concentration. A lively acidity invites a long and balanced finish.
