`Annexus` Grenache

Barossa Valley

John Duval

One of the world's great winemakers, John Duval was given the 'Grange' torch...

by Max Schubert and passed it on to his successor when he left Penfolds to start out on his own with the 2003 vintage, sourcing fruit from some long-time friends in the Barossa. His red wines - a Shiraz and a Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvedre blend - are sourced from old Barossa vines aged between 50 and 100 years old and showcase the best of the Barossa region. In 2010 he introduced a white Plexus wine to his range using traditional white Rhône varietals.

Fruit for the Annexus Grenache was sourced from two very old low yielding Barossa vineyards. One lies south of Tanunda and is over 100 years old; the other is in Eden Valley and was planted in the 1860s. John obtained a small allocation from the older vineyard for the first time in 2013. A small unique blend, this wine will be made only in the best years.

Vintage Information

The 2015 vintage started with a warmer than usual spring followed by early, but even, flowering and fruit-set. Frost, particularly in the Northern Barossa reduced yields however the conditions during fruit ripening were pleasingly mild and dry with rain in mid-January brining some welcome relief. Grenache was picked on 16th from the Northern Barossa and the 25th of March from Eden Valley.

Fermentation occurred in small open top fermenters, incorporating 20% whole bunches. The wine was 100% barrel matured for 12 months in old French oak hogsheads (300 litre barrels). Only 250 cases were made of the first vintage of this wine.

Tasting Notes

Bright purple red. Vibrant red fruit aromatics complexed by red roses and savoury spice. Fine and long, delicate yet carrying impressive purity and flavour intensity. An array of ripe red fruits, dark cherry and raspberry fill the palate finishing with hints of clove, dusty earth and velvety tannins.
