Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 in the historic township of Auburn,...
Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish and functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking. Jeff is best known for his iconic Rieslings - Polish Hill and Springvale - and he has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Valley Riesling. By combining a disciplined approach and decades of experience, Grosset consistently achieves the purest expression of variety and place.
The vineyards are situated in the Piccadilly Valley of the Adelaide Hills, a very cool sub-region. Given that the re-planting of vineyards in the Adelaide Hills has only occurred since the early 1980s, their full potential is only just emerging. The south facing site has predominantly mottled, course grained yellow clays and quartz rich soil over sandstone.
Vibrant, flavoursome and unblemished fruit from healthy vines made a promising start to what turned out to be the most exciting vintage in a decade. A warmer than average December was followed by normal temperatures, but a dry January. February began cool, with some much-needed rain before a string of warm, sunny days and cool nights, making for ideal harvest conditions.
All grapes were hand picked, crushed and de-stemmed. Only free run juice was used, which was chilled to 0°C for five days and then racked off lees. The wine was barrel fermented in French oak barrique (40% new) for 10 months, with partial natural malolactic fermentation.
Riotously perfumed and intense, though delicate, primary flavours of nectarine and peach against a backdrop of hazelnut complexity. This is refined yet exuberant with lively flavours and bright natural acidity on a fresh, crisp, pristine finish of impressive length. Delicious!
