Brunello di Montalcino

This estate has four hectares of vineyards, 2.5 of which are destined for...

Brunello and the rest for Rosso di Montalcino. The estate is situated in Tavernelle, to the north of Argiano and to the west of Pieve di Santa Restituta. It is in south-central Montalcino. Owned by Sergio Marchetti, whose family has been there since the 1700s, the wines are now made by his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with help from his son, Stefano. Adriano learned his trade during the 10 years he worked with Giacomo Tachis and this comes across in the supple tannins of the Brunello.

The vineyards are located at 300 metres above sea level and are south facing. Soils here are firm, tending to clay. The first vines were planted in 1984 and are spur cordon trained with about 4,000 plants per hectare.

Vintage Information

After a rainy spring and summer, September and October saw plenty of sunshine allowing the well-ventilated grapes to ripen fully and healthily, with very good balance between alcohol and acidity. Quantities were up 10% compared to the 2012 vintage. The delayed maturation resulted in the development of typical Sangiovese perfumes, elegant tannins, and acidity, which is reminiscent of wines from the 1980s.

Cold pre-fermentation maceration took place for the first five to six days in cement and temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Fermentation then happened at between 30-32°C for 22 days, with natural yeasts in the first part and selected yeasts for the second part. Malolactic fermentation for 10% of the wine took place in new barriques and the remainder in cement vats. The wine aged for one year in big oak casks, then a second year in one year old French oak barriques of 225 litres. After the oak ageing, it spent a further year in cement tanks followed by eight months in bottle.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby in colour, with aromas of ripe and dried red berry fruits. Wonderful complexity on the palate, with a core of fruit and spicy notes. The tannins are noteworthy, silky and persistent. This is a wine with great balance, elegance and complexity which will continue to develop its flavours in the bottle.
