Aloxe-Corton `Les Brunettes et Planchots`

Côte de Beaune

Château de Santenay

This magnificent property, which dates back to the 9th century, is also known...

as Château Philippe le Hardi, as it was once owned by the first Duc of Burgundy. Philippe le Hardi is famous as the person who banned the cultivation of Gamay in the Côte d'Or, saying in his edict of 1395 that only Pinot Noir could be used in the production of red wines from the already fabled slopes. Despite its long history, the property had fallen on hard times until it was taken over by the French bank Crédit Agricole in recent years. They have invested heavily, bringing in a new team to support the general manager, Gérard Fagnoni, and putting the emphasis on quality. The property has 98 hectares of vineyard, 72 of which are in Mercurey. These are remarkably well made and good value wines from the Côte d'Or and Côte Chalonnaise.

Vineyards

Aloxe-Corton is a very picturesque village in the Côte de Beaune, famous for the quality of its soils and its production of red wines that have the characteristics and structure of the wines of the Côte de Nuits. The vines are 60 years old, producing concentrated and well-structured wines with great ageing potential.

Vintage Information

2015 was overall a good year with moderate rainfall followed by warm temperatures to aid ripening. A mild, wet winter replenished water reserves which was much needed with the hot, dry summer that followed. A few inches of rain in June, followed by a further inch or so in August, were critical to refresh the vineyards and ensure even ripening.

Vinification

The grapes were cold soaked for seven days before fermentation took place for 12 to 14 days. Punch downs and pump overs allowed for the gentle extraction of colour, tannins and flavour. The wine was aged in oak barrels before being bottled in December 2016.

Tasting Notes

The Aloxe-Corton 'Les Brunettes et Planchots' exudes seriousness. It boasts a smoky and savoury character, coupled with ripe, sweet red and earthy, black berry fruits. On the palate the tannins are ripe and round, well-balance with racy acidity. It has a beautiful concentration and will last for several more years yet.
