cattle farm in Monein in south west France. He sold the cattle, purchased four hectares of vines and started Domaine Cauhapé. He made his first sweet wines in 1980 (historically, Jurançon produced only sweet wines) and his first dry wines in 1984. Today, the domaine is one of the most highly regarded in the appellation and the wines are hallmark Jurançon, showcasing the very best of what the region has to offer.

Vineyards

Domaine Cauhapé own 43 hectares of vines. This is a real stronghold in Jurançon, given that the entire appellation totals only 1,000 hectares. Planted in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the vineyards are south and south-east facing and are situated up to 400 metres above sea level, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and retain good levels of acidity. The vines are on average 10 years old, sustainably farmed and they are planted on siliceous-clay soils, which have excellent water retention for the hotter, summer months. Vineyards are planted with Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng and Courbu as well as lesser well known indigenous varieties, such as Camaralet.

Vintage Information

2017 was a great vintage in Juraçon. Domaine Cauhapé experienced ideal weather conditions during the long ripening season, which saw fantastic flavour and colour intensity across all grape varieties. Harvest began on 14th September and finished in late November. This particular cuvée was picked between mid-September and early October.

Vinification

‘Chant des Vignes’ is a blend of 60% Gros Manseng and 40% Camaralet. The grapes were crushed and macerated on the skins for 12 hours to extract delicate aromas. The must was gently pressed into temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation. The wine was aged on its fine lees for four months, adding texture and character to the finished wine.

Tasting Notes

The nose has delicate floral perfumes, coupled with notes of apricot and white peaches. On the palate, fresh citrus fruit flavours and bright acidity lift the wine, making it beautifully balanced and refreshingly moreish.
