Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Created in 1971, the Saint-Véran AOC covers 600 hectares spread over six villages and surrounds Pouilly-Fuissé AOC. The ‘côte rotie’ (roasted slope) is located in Davayé village, at the foot of Vergisson Rock. This area owes its name to the fact that the vines are planted on a south-facing slope with excellent exposure. This particular topography protects the vines from north and west winds. The soil is made of limestone screes.

Vintage Information

2014 was perfectly balanced between dry and warm periods and low amounts of rain. This made the grapes grow easily and in perfect sanitary conditions. Weather was also pleasant at harvest time with15 sunny days.

Vinification

At the winery, the whole bunches of grapes were gently pressed for two and a half hours. The temperature of the must was brought down to 12°C before being immediately transferred to barrels with no settling to preserve maximum lees. A very long, cool fermentation (up to 10 months) followed using indigenous yeasts. In the cellar the wine aged for 19 months with no racking or stirring to bring out all of this wine’s minerality. A proportion of 30% new French oak barrels were used, which had been toasted at low temperatures for a long time to impart a subtle and delicate touch of oak. The wine was bentonite fined and very gently filtered before being bottled using gravity in March 2016.

Tasting Notes

The Saint-Véran `La Côte Rôtie` is pale gold in colour, with a beautiful and elegant aroma including flinty mineral notes, aromas of ripe pear and citrus, as well as smoky nuances from ageing in gently toasted oak. On the palate, the wine has great freshness, a rich body and an effortlessly persistent finish.
