Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Gevrey-Chambertin has 330 hectares under production towards the northern end of the Côte de Nuits. The vines are situated between 240-280m above sea level. Soils here are limestone-based, with a high proportion of clay marlstone. This gives power and roundness to the wines. The single vineyard of Les Jeunes Rois is located on the famous slope of Brochon, considered to be one of the best areas in the appellation.

Vintage Information

2009 was an exceptional year. The grapes were very healthy and picked at optimum maturity. Very little sorting was necessary at the winery; only a small percentage of the grapes were discarded. The red wines are very concentrated and ripe with low acidity and good colour, meaning they will be approachable in their youth.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-picked and sorted at the winery by a team of ten people. After de-stemming, the berries were gravity fed into tank for 26 days maceration (including one week cold maceration) and fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine was barrel-fermented and then aged on the lees for 19 months, with no racking, using a proportion of 30% new French oak barrels. The barrels had been toasted at low temperatures for a long time, to impart a very delicate hint of oak to the wine. The wine was not fined, but was very gently filtered before being bottled using gravity in April 2011.

Tasting Notes

Bright and clear with ruby colour. The bouquet has notes of blackcurrant and cherry, and a hint of toast. The palate is rich, deep and full-bodied with lovely mouthfeel supported by velvet-textured tannins. Long on the finish.
