Vosne-Romanée `Les Jacquines`

Côte de Nuits

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...

Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vosne-Romanée is located at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, between Vougeot and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The 'Les Jacquines' vineyard is located in the south of the village at the limit of Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. The vines here are 50 years old with low yields due to de-budding. Green harvest is done if needed, as well as careful working of the soil using very limited amount of fertilizers and conducting environmentally friendly pest management. Although it is not certified, this vineyards is farmed entirely organically.

Vintage Information

2007 was marked by varied weather conditions with a mild winter and warm spring which led to a very early start of the vegetative cycle. The summer was cooler than normal but sunny weather during the first fortnight in September allowed the grapes to ripen sufficiently in order to produce red wines with firm structure that will age well in the mid-term.

Grapes were hand picked and sorted into perforated 20kg crates. The second sorting took place at the sorting table in the winery, after which the grapes were 100% destalked but not crushed, and put into vats using gravity. Total maceration lasted for 24 days including one week of cold maceration at 12°C. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts and infrequent pigeage. The wine was aged for 12 months on its lees without racking off, with 30% new barrels made from French wood. The wine was lightly filtered but not fined, then bottled, using gravity in September 2008. Just over 100 cases were produced.

Tasting Notes

This wine is intense ruby in colour and has subtle aromas of black fruit with floral notes on the nose. Very elegant on the palate, with flavours of blackcurrant and spice, soft tannins and a long lingering finish.
