over the Pauly estate from his father after doing vintages in California, New Zealand and other parts of Germany. Most of the seven hectares of vineyards are in the heart of the Mosel Valley in the village of Lieser, with the exception of a small parcel in the highly regarded, neighbouring village of Bernkastel. The majority of Axel's wines are dry or off-dry in style and are closed with screwcap to preserve the purity and freshness from Riesling grown on the famous slate soils of the Mosel.

'Generations' Riesling was harvested from the family's steeply sloping vineyard in Lieser. Here, the soil is predominantly grey and blue slate, which is cooler than the red slate of neighbouring Bernkastel and gives more minerally wines than the latter. Strategies, such as stringent crop-thinning and leaf-plucking ensures excellent flavour concentration in the fruit.

Vintage Information

The beginning of the season was typical however, high rainfall in early summer created serious disease pressure, which required careful vineyard management. There were also late frost and hail events, which threatened the entire harvest. However, the weather improved from July onwards, and the crop quality recovered resulting in wines lower in alcohol and higher in acidity than 2015.


The grapes underwent skin contact for 10 hours prior to fermentation in stainless steel tank, in order to extract precious Riesling flavours. The fermentation lasted three weeks at approximately 15°C with natural yeasts in stainless steel vats. The wine matured on fine yeast for four to five months. 'Generations' is classified 'Feinherb', i.e. an off-dry style of wine achieved by stopping the fermentation, leaving some residual sugar in the final wine.

Tasting Notes

This wine is bright yellow with youthful reflections. On the nose, the scent of fresh hay mingles with yellow fruits. On the palate, the wine is tangy, with subtle fruits and a hint of minerality. The sweetness and high acidity are well balanced, with a dry finish.
