Vermentino
The most widely planted white grape variety of Corsica, dominating the island's white AOC wines. In Sardegna it is picked early to retain acidity but still manages to produce wines of lively character. Attempts at a richer, fuller style have also appeared, notably from Capichera in the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, created in 1996. It is an aromatic and attractive varietal which has proved to have the same DNA profile as Piemonte's Favorita and Liguria's Pigato. It is becoming more popular in the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is now permitted in a number of AOCs, including white Cotes de Roussillon.
